A recent large (3,800 patient) multicenter survey, the Needs, Symptoms, Incidence, Global Eye Health Trends (NSIGHT) study, found that about 50% of glasses- and contact lens-wearers experience glare and halos more than three times a week.

About 40% of glasses and contact lens-wearers found the glare and halos unsatisfactory and had not been able to find a solution. Add on top of that the dissatisfaction with frames, contact lens solutions, infections, and the dissatisfaction rate becomes, well, way too high.

In contrast, 97% of LASIK and PRK patients are satisfied and would recommend the procedure to a friend. In large studies, 3% of LASIK and PRK patients are unsatisfied for any reason, including glare and halos, hating their mean doctor, no wifi reception, bad office coffee, or no beverages at all.

Further details of the study will be released over the course of the year in multiple journals.

Latisse is a medication we dispense to our patients that you paint on your upper eyelid like eyeliner (only easier) each day. Over the course of 16 weeks, you grow longer, thicker, *darker* lashes. There is no chance of eye color change with pure light-eyed or brown-eyed patients.

Top 10 Reasons Why Latisse Beats Mascara (or Fake Eyelashes or Extensions) Any Day:

10) Never smudges

9) No fussing over buying the right color — the color comes out just right for you

No embarassing flakes on your cheeks

7) No black smudge under your eyes the next morning

6) Your lashes look the same after a whole day at the pool or beach – no raccoon eyes

5) No “ouch!” when you take off those fakes

4) The lashes are real. They just grew.

3) You’ll finally have something to curl

2) Everyone will notice you look great and rested but won’t know why!

1) Your lashes look great and not fake and gunky when someone sees you up close and is about to kiss you…

I just reviewed my results with the ophthalmologist who built and monitors the database. He nearly fell off his chair.

It turns out that worldwide only 81% of patients are 20/20 after LASIK, and a tiny 28% are 20/16 (better than 20/20).

In contrast, 100% of my patients were 20/20 and, get this, 100% were 20/16!

He said I have the best results in the world, “and those aren’t easy treatments you’ve been doing, either!”

Wow. I know I work fanatically to control variables to improve your LASIK outcome, but best in the world? Wow! How cool to have a benchmark like that, and to have the feedback that all this careful control of variables and outcomes is giving you the best possible results.

To see what world-class results I can give you, call us at (858) 551-4100 to schedule your LASIK consultation. We answer the phone from 5:30 am to 7:00 pm weekdays and 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on weekends.

Yesterday a patient came in to the office, planning on using her Flexible Spending Account to pay for LASIK in January, a common November occurrence. She will do the paperwork this week to fund her FLEX account for the full amount of the procedure, which will be taken out of her paycheck in 12 equal monthly amounts with pre-tax dollars.

The entire amount will fund on January 1 and be available for her to spend on medical care, so we scheduled her San Diego LASIK procedure for January 6th.

What caught my attention was that she knows she will be leaving the company in March 2011. She will leave the company having had only 3 of 12 monthly amounts withheld from her paycheck. This is all she will ever pay for the procedure. Think about it. She will only pay 3 of 12 payments for her procedure, ever. She scheduled her LASIK procedure knowing she will immediately get a 75% discount.

Then there is the reason for the FLEX plan in the first place, the savings from paying with pre-tax dollars, about another 30% savings. So, she paid 25% of full value and got a 30% discount on that, so she will actually pay only 17.5% of the total value:

0.25 x 0.70 = 0.175 = 17.5%

or

an 82.5% discount.

Wow! Spread the word throughout the office! FLEX plans are powerful for making LASIK San Diego dreams come true, and even more so in special situations like this.

Recently, a really nice guy came into my office with his wife for a LASIK consultation. His vision without glasses or contact lenses was 20/80. To pass the vision test at the California DMV, you have to have 20/40 vision or better, so his vision was twice as bad as the DMV requires, and four times worse than a perfect 20/20.

His wife told me he has been driving without contacts or glasses and she is scared to be in a car with him behind the wheel. With vision is twice as bad as the state minimum to drive and four times worse than perfect 20/20 vision, we were all very glad he came in for his LASIK San Diego consultation at La Jolla LASIK Institute that day. BTW, I got the patient’s permission to tell this story. In fact, he and his wife urged me to tell it to help get other blurry-eyed drivers in here to get their LASIK and start driving safely again!

Even though the DMV tests people’s vision, many people are on the road, driving their cars and trucks without any correction whatsoever. Some of them squinted to pass the drivers’ test, some of them memorized the chart, and as for the rest of them, I have no idea how they passed the vision portion of the drivers’ test.

So get LASIK and save a life, maybe yours!

When it is safe to exercise after having LASIK?

Generally, 3 days after the procedure but consider your sport and how you play the game:

Don’t squint or scrunch your eyes for 24 hours

Return to most exercise in 1-3 days

Back to swimming pools, hot tubs, oceans, rivers, and lakes after 14 days

Don’t rub your eyes for 30 days

Choose PRK over LASIK if the sport involves getting hit in the face

PRK is Best if You'll Be Getting Hit in the Eye

If your sport is boxing, martial arts, wrestling, or another sport with a big chance of getting hit in the eye, let me know, and we’ll consider PRK for your San Diego refractive procedure.

Hold off for two weeks from spending time in Jacuzzis, playing water polo, or swimming just about anywhere.

Remember if you sweat profusely not to rub your eyes for a month after your procedure. Just blot your face, not your eyes. I was a big eye-rubber (and have the wrinkles to prove it!) but I did it. If I can refrain from rubbing my eyes for a month, so can you!

When you’re working out at the gym, consider all the equipment to be covered in toxic waste, so don’t touch your face until you’ve washed your hands.

Pat your face, don't rub your eyes!

Sure, you can walk or do yoga for exercise after LASIK, but after day 3, as long as you don’t get hit in the eye or rub your eyes, you don’t need to limit yourself to these!

Yoga after LASIK

Confused? Come on in with your specific question and I’ll help you find clarity, and peace of mind, and your best LASIK San Diego or PRK San Diego procedure.
