The Top 5 LASIK Questions, Answered
December 27, 2019 • 2 responses
At the La Jolla LASIK Institute, I answer questions about LASIK every day. In this post, we cover the Top 5 LASIK questions I receive from my patients.
1. Am I a Good LASIK Candidate?
This question always needs to be answered on a case-by-case basis. However, I generally look at the following factors when determining LASIK candidacy:
• How stable your vision prescription is
• Whether you have any medical conditions, especially those that weaken your immune system
• Whether you’ve had a previous laser eye surgery
• Your current medications and allergies
• Whether you have eye conditions such as glaucoma
• The thickness of your corneas
Older patients are welcome to come in for a LASIK consultation, but patients must be at least 18 years old to get LASIK. Women who are pregnant or nursing may come in for a pre-LASIK consultation, but should wait to schedule their LASIK procedure because hormonal changes can cause vision fluctuations.
2. How Do I Choose the Right LASIK Surgeon?
Experience, credentials, patient testimonials and surgical skill are all important factors to consider. You also want to work with someone you feel comfortable with. Scheduling an in-person consultation and bringing a list of questions can help with this process.
3. What Results Can I Expect?
A successful LASIK procedure should reduce your reliance on eyeglasses and contact lenses. Some, but not all, patients may achieve 20/20 vision after their procedure.
It’s important to have realistic expectations going into your LASIK procedure. Talk to your laser eye surgeon about your desired results to make sure you have the right expectations.
4. What Are the Risks of LASIK?
Common side effects after LASIK include:
• Dry eye
• Light sensitivity
• Halos or glares
Major complications are rare when patients are appropriately screened and LASIK is performed by a skilled refractive surgeon.
5. How Much Does LASIK Cost?
Some companies advertise very low prices for LASIK, but then quote a much higher price after a consultation. I’m happy to offer patients a customized quote after their free initial consultation. This quote is based on the specific technology being used and the patient’s unique needs. I also offer financing through CareCredit with flexible monthly payment plans, and patients may pay by credit card or using funds from flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts.
